Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is an incredibly fun 2010 action/comedy, (1h 52m long) directed by Edgar Wright and adapted from a comic book it achieves this transition with great success. Also, the "Scott Pilgrim" universe is truly huge and contains fantastic works! Basically, the plot revolves around a 22-year-old, slacker Canadian bassist who has to defeat seven evil exes of his new girlfriend to win the right to date her. Pretty absurd right ? But believe me that movie is something else. Even if you usually hate teen romance tropes like I do, this masterpiece might just become your new favorite. because it’s so rare to find a film that truly makes you feel like you’re reading a comic book. I’ll tell you why it’s one of the best adaptations in the cinema industry: beacuse that’s one of the strongest parts of that movie ! The visual effects are sick ! just look at how cool they are.
I think those comic-book-style effects prove just how deeply rooted the movie is in its source material. I don’t know about you, but those details make the film so much more entertaining. We all used to effects like massive explosions or usual superpowers in movies, right? However, small, arcade-style details like point earning, health bars, or quick character stats are what truly grab your attention and keep you engaged in the game.
Of course, you can tell from these scenes that the film won't be slow-paced. Yes, the emotional scenes between the couples in the film can be calm at times. In terms of tempo, even the emotional scenes don't fall below a certain pace, offering fast-paced and sharp scenes. Naturally, this inevitably leads to quick and sharp camera cuts and movements. I would say that the tempo is generally fast, but neither too tiring nor too slow. The film features multiple color palettes (mostly vibrant colors). Scott Pilgrim delivers a spot-on production in this regard. Also, regarding the time jumps in the film, although flashback techniques are used to depict the past relationships between Ramona and her exes, a generally straightforward timeline prevails. And I have to mention the cast and the powerful acting scenes. It's undeniable how well the actors fit the physical appearances of their characters. First of all: Michael Cera (aka Scott Pilgrim) He's truly the best at portraying awkward teenagers. He does owns the role, and I think his personal chemistry and Scott's matches perfectly. I can't imagine anyone else for this role. As I said, his calm demeanor and goofy but also very cool youthful appearance make him the best person to play Scott. And secondly, I want to take a look at our dream girl:
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (aka Ramona Flowers) I mean, CAN WE TALK ABOUT HER BEAUTY MORE ?!?!?! I think she's absolutely gorgeous and well-proportioned, her sharp facial features perfectly fit the definition of "that American girl." Also, her more mature personality than Scott's is very accurate; she portrayed that personal trait very well. And, as I said, the chemistry between Mary Elizabeth and Michael Cera as lead actors is absolutely the same, which I think is important because they have many scenes together.
Next up, the funniest character in the series: Kieran Culkin (aka, Wallace Wells) I SWEAR HE İS THE FUNNİEST CHARACTER I’VE EVER SEEN. Also, Kieran Culkin's ability to portray sarcastic characters is top-notch, and Wallace is a perfect example of this type of character. And... I don't know why, but I think his personality and facial expressions suit Wallace's flirtatious roommate vibe perfectly. Even the supporting roles are well-written and very well-acted by their actors; for example, Knives Chau, our seventeen-year-old fangirl, played by Ellen Wong. And Brie Larson, in the role of Envy Adams, is absolutely brilliant, and she's also the actress and singer of the masterpiece song "Black Sheep” The song actually belongs to the famous Canadian indie-rock band Metric. There are two different versions: Metric's version was included on the film's original album. However, due to popular demand, years later, the version sung by Brie Larson in the film, "Black Sheep" (Brie Larson Vocal Version), was officially released on digital platforms. However, I must admit that, in my personal opinion, her version is much better and more iconic; and since the music video is a scene from the film, it was even more fun to see it in the movie. The other musical part of the film is the band Sex Bob-omb, with Scott as the bassist. They feature in some scenes with short songs they made, but I must admit, if you like this type of garage rock band, Sex-Bomb has some really good songs you can actually listen to. And now I invite you to deeply dive into the Scott Pilgrim universe. The best way to experience the Scott Pilgrim universe is to first read the original comics, then the movie, the video games, and finally the Netflix anime series. Since later adaptations alter the original plot, watching them out of order will spoil the surprises. However, that order ısnt certaın, you can change the order. I assuming not everyone has access to the game and comic book, I recommend watching the movie first, then the Netflix series, and finally, if you have the chance, reading the game and comic. For example, my personal order is: first I watched the movie, then I played the game (I even recently got a Scott Pilgrim Ex game, I'll play that soon too), then I watched the Netflix version (unfortunately, it got by far the worst rating in this universe from me), and now I'm just left to read the comic. I would love to read the comic book in the future.
Sometimes we add a movie to our watchlist because its poster looks really cool; especially if you like hanging movie posters on your wall, we think the poster itself will look great on the wall. The Scott Pilgrim movie poster is an example of this. The red background looks really nice on my own wall to be honest. And Scott's figure bending over with that guitar is so cool, it reminds me of concert banners for music bands. Also, the title coming from Scott's Guitar shows use the comic book-based effects !
The visual blast isn't just the poster; the visual comedy in the film is also top-notch, so if you're a comedy fan, you'll enjoy this movie. "Is Scott Here ?" scene is the best proof of that.
Mr. Wright takes boring human functions and frames them with comic book or video game graphics, making them inherently funny. "Pee Stick": When Scott goes to the bathroom, a real video game loading bar appears on the screen with the words "Pee Stick" and slowly diminishes as he urinates. Absurd X-ray: When Scott encounters Knives Chau at the door, an arcade-style "Character Info" box appears beside him, detailing his age and stats, immediately highlighting the awkwardness of Scott dating a high school student. Throwing into the Trash Can: When Scott throws a letter into the trash, he throws it backward without looking. A lightning-fast cut and a loud, exaggerated sound effect instantly show the letter landing perfectly in a small trash can across the room. (Michael Cera shot the scene several times to make sure it hit the trash can.) At a party, Scott tries to explain to his friend Comeau who Ramona is, but he doesn't use words. He simply uses his hands to draw a huge, curved shape around his head. Comeau immediately understands the visual clue and knows exactly who he's talking about. (In the comic book, he shows the same drawing and asks about Ramona.)
If I were to judge the movie on its own, putting aside the game and the comic, I'd say it has a very funny sense of humor (despite having a complex sense of humor and rarely laughing at movies, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World made me laugh). It's a genuinely funny and entertaining film. And finally, this is one of my favorite movies, It makes me happy and having a good time while watching. I really love the fact that all the characters are so cool, Scott's band is great, Wallace is so funny and lazy, you know, just hanging out and trying to find a date, but also very sarcastic towards Scott. Ramona is a very "alternative style/cool style" and strong female character, I really love her. The plot is different from other teen love stories, it's extraordinary. Yes, overall 5 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend it to everyone 13 and up. Thanks for reading! Don't forget to share your thoughts on the movie in the comments. Also, if you have any suggestions on how I can improve my review, please share.
